Cornbelt Teams at State

Three Cornbelt teams moved on to the next round, while another was eliminated in the opening round of the South Dakota Amatuer Baseball Tournament in Mitchell. The defending champions of Canova got a complete game shutout from Derek Miller, in a 10-0 win over Akron on Saturday. Miller gave up just 5 hits while striking out 9 Akron batters. Justin Miller led the offense with 3 hits, 3 runs, and 2 RBI.

The Flandreau Cardinals also won their opening round game, a 10-0 win over the Freeman Black Sox. Deion Entringer, a pick-up player from Colman, struckout 8 batters over seven innings. Carter Howell had 3 hits and scored 3 runs for Flandreau. Tanner Harris had a game high 3 RBI.

On Sunday, the Dell Rapids Mudcats became the third Cornbelt team to advance to the next round, with a 10-4 win over Dimock/Emery. The Raptors scored in each of the first 3 innings off Dell Rapids starter Jared Donahue, to take a 3-2 lead. The Mudcats took the lead for good with 2 runs in the 4th, and four more runs in the 5th inning. Every Dell Rapids starter had at least one hit. The final game of the opening round was a back-and-forth slugfest between Madison and Four Corners. The Broncos appeared to blow the game opening in the 4th inning. Madison sent 11 men to the plate, and scored 8 runs in the inning. The big hit was a 3-run homer from Nick Bird for his second hit of the inning. Another run in the 5th inning had the Broncos up 11-3, but that’s when the wheels came off. Four Corners sent 14 men to the plate in a 9 run 5th inning. Two pick-up players, Seth Rockafellow and Paul Clark, combined to pitch 5 innings for Madison. The pair allowed 12 runs on 14 hits with 4 walks.

After scoring 11 runs early in the game, the Broncos bats went quiet, and the 13-11 lead held up for Four Corners. Nick Bird finished with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Heith Williams also scored twice and drove in 2 runs.
