Jared Miller and Garrett Gassman each hit solo home runs on Wednesday, as the Canvoa Gang moved into the State Baseball quarter-finals with a 3-1 over Flandreau. The Cardinals struck first with an RBI groundout from Jared Campbell to score Luke Gassman in the 3rd. Miller answered next inning with a solo homer to tie the game at a run apiece. That score held up until the 9th, when Miller hit a sacrifice fly to give The Gang a lead. Gassman followed with a solo home run, and Trey Krier then finished off a complete game win on the mound in the 9th.
Krier finished with 4 strikeouts. Bret Sevetson also threw a complete game for Flandreau, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 6 strikeouts.
The Dell Rapids Mudcats will face Canova in the next round, after a 16-6 win over Four Corners in 8 innings. Chad Hunt, Josh Roemen, and Mark Houck each had three hits for the Mudcats. Houck had a pair of doubles for the second straight game, while driving in 2 runs. Andrew Wegner picked up the win, throwing 3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Mudcats and Canova will play the final game of the quarter-finals on Friday night at 7:30. Quarterfinal games begin tonight in Mitchell, with Winner/Colome taking on Plankinton, followed by Alexandria vs. Milbank.
