West Central Looking Forward to 11A Title Game Against Dell Rapids

A year ago the West Central Trojans football team was knocked out of the playoffs by Dell Rapids. Tonight they will play them in the 11A State Championship.

There is a huge difference between last year’s team and this years for West Central. A year ago they finished 4-6, losing their last five. However they made a huge improvement in the win column this year, going 10-1 and currently riding a four-game win streak.

Head Coach Chris Hernandez credits the seniors on the team for the big turnaround.

A year ago, the Trojans lost to the Quarriers in the Quarterfinals of the 11A playoffs 19-16, ending the Trojans season. This year, West Central has the opportunity to repay the favor by not just beating Dell Rapids, but by doing so in the state championship game.

Both West Central and Dell Rapids have had good seasons offensively, with each team putting up over 30 points per game. With two high-powered offenses playing each other, Hernandez believes the game could come down to whoever has the better defense.

One thing that could work in the Trojans favor is how they have performed in one score games. A year ago they lost four one score games, but this year they are 3-1 in those games. Being battle tested might be able to give West Central an advantage.

It won’t be easy for either team, as Dell Rapids comes in undefeated, but with the improvements West Central has made this year along with having their season ended by Dell Rapids a year ago might be just enough for the Trojans to be 11A State Champions.

For those unable to make it down to the DakotaDome in Vermillion, SD tonight, the game can be heard on FM 103.1 or online at AmazingMadison.com. Kickoff is at 7:30pm with pregame at 7pm tonight.
