The SDHSAA Board of Directors held a teleconference on Friday to discuss the Spring Sports season as well as what to do with the postponed Winter Tournaments, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. With Governor Noem calling off school until May, all Spring Sports (practices or events) have been postponed until then. The SDHSAA initially called off all activities until early April, before Noem’s announcement.
A variety of options were discussed for spring activites: placing State Tournaments around Graduation, only having Regions and then State Meets for Track & Field, Golf and Tennis plus.
They talked about the Winter Tournaments: having State Band in Mitchell, June 11th-13th and then State Basketball June 15th-20th (depending on the structure).
A few of the Members did commend the SDHSAA’s office for their hard work thus far and many felt that keeping the options open would give some hope.
In the end, there was no decision made and the Board of Directors thought it was best to continue discussion and meet again closer to the potential return to school date in May. All of this does hinge on whether there is school in May or not.
