Mudcats Shutout Northville to Advance to Round Two

In Round One of the Class B Amateur Baseball State Tournament, the reigning State Champion Dell Rapids Mudcats led off Saturday afternoon getting the shutout win over the Northville Merchants, 7-0, and also only giving up two total hits.

Kris Regas brought in the first run of the game for the Mudcats in the top of the second, before two runs were brought in the next inning by Ty Hogland and Chad Hunt. Two more runs a piece were scored in the fifth and ninth innings, leading the Mudcats to win 7-0.

Dalton Allen gets the win on the mound for Dell Rapids, only giving up one hit while striking out five through six-innings. Dalton Lehnen closed for the Mudcats, giving up only one hit as well, and striking out seven in the final three innings.

The loss goes to Garrett Knox for the Merchants, giving up eight hits, four errors, and a staggering eleven walked batters. Knox did retire seven batters as well.

Hunt led the Mudcats with three hits, while also bringing in one run. Trevor Freudenthal followed with two hits of his own, along with an RBI. Regas led in runs scored, scoring two runs on one hit.

The Mudcats move on to Round Two of the state tournament as they will play the late game Tuesday evening. Their win also extends the Cornbelt’s winning record in the state tournament to 5-1 for the league.
