MCM Girls Win Back-to-Back Home Games

Earlier this week, the McCook Central/Montrose girls basketball team played in back-to-back home games, with the Fighting Cougars getting wins against Dell Rapids and Baltic. 

In the first game this week for MCM, Dell Rapids was able to get the early lead, scoring 12 points in each of the first two quarters to go into halftime up 24-17. With the Quarriers getting 12 more points coming out of halftime, they had a 36-28 advantage against the Fighting Cougars heading into the final quarter.

MCM, however, exploded late in the fourth quarter after Dell Rapids had an 11 point lead. The Fighting Cougars went on to outscore the Quarriers 22-10 in the final quarter to escape with a 50-46 home win. 

Michaela McCormick had a game leading 17 points for MCM to go with her 13 rebounds, giving McCormick a double-double. Abby Wagner added 13 points and eight rebounds for MCM. 

Jenna Miller for Dell Rapids had 17 points, tying her for the game high in points. Claire Wynja finished with 10 points and six rebounds for the Quarriers. 


Then on Tuesday, MCM was more successful against Baltic, getting out to the early 17-11 lead after the first quarter and not surrendering it the rest of the night, going into halftime up 39-27.

Both teams came out of halftime slow, with a combined 16 points scored between the two teams, but they picked it up in the final quarter, with Baltic outscoring MCM 15-12 in the quarter. However, that was not enough for Baltic to get the comeback as the Fighting Cougars won 60-49. 

Two players for MCM recorded a double-double with Aubree Kranz knocking down 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds and Abby Wagner scoring 14 points while also getting 10 rebounds. 

Daynica Witzel for Baltic ended the night with 20 points, and Baylee Breece had 13 points.

The two wins improved MCM’s record to 6-3 this season. 

The Fighting Cougars will hit the road tomorrow night, with a game at Flandreau before staying on the road next week when they travel to Howard on Monday, January 23rd. The MCM @ Howard game next week can be heard on FM 103.1 or online at
