Howard Unable to Complete Late Game Comeback in Consolation Semifinal

In the Class B Consolation Semifinal yesterday, the Howard Tigers were unable to complete the late game comeback as they fell to the Castlewood Warriors by a final score of 51-47.

It was low scoring early in the game, with Howard leading 8-5 with less than a minute to go in the first quarter before Castlewood hit back-to-back three’s to end the quarter up 11-8.

The Warriors led early in the second quarter, but the Tigers made the comeback late before halftime as they outscored the Warriors 17-13 in the second quarter. 

Howard led 25-24 at the break. In the first half, Castlewood hit five three-pointers. Neither team led by more than six points.

Both sides kept it close in the second half, with it remaining a one point game after the third quarter as Castleewood led 36-35. The Warriors began to try pulling away in the fourth, with their largest lead of the game as they led by nine with three and a half to go. 

The Tigers brought it back within five with under two minutes before hitting a three-pointer while on their seven point run to cut it to two points. 

The two teams traded baskets in the final minute, but Castlewood closed out the game with a big block on a three-pointer that would’ve potentially given Howard the lead. Instead, the Tigers comeback bid came up short as the Warriors won 51-47.

Kate Connor had a game-leading 17 points for Howard and fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine. 

Canyon Kidd added double-digits scoring with ten points and five rebounds, while Abby Aslesen had 12 rebounds to go with her eight points.

Madeline Horn scored 15 points for Castlewood to lead the Warriors, as she went 3-5 from three-point range. Horn also grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals. 

Howard shot 18-59 from the field and made 5-26 from deep. Meanwhile, Castlewood was 17-43 shooting with eight of their 21 three-point attempts going in. Both teams committed 16 turnovers.

The game was tied five times, with 12 different lead changes before the Warriors began to pull away. 

Next for both teams, Castlewood will play Jones County in the Class B Consolation Championship at 1:45pm while Howard plays right before, at noon against Sully Buttes. The Tigers game at 12pm today can be heard on FM 103.1 or online at AmazingMadison.com.
