Cornbelt v Sunshine Tournament This Weekend

This weekend will feature two amateur baseball leagues competing against one another, with the first annual Cornbelt v Sunshine Tournament scheduled for June 17-19. The idea to form this tournament was spearheaded by Humboldt-Hartford Wood Ducks Manager, Jacob Ellens, and Humboldt-Hartford Gamecocks Manager, Chad Morrison.

Ellens said that the idea was originally brought up at the Preseason Cornbelt Meeting prior to the start of the season when League President and Lennox Alpacas Manager, Chad Riley, mentioned the idea of playing the Sunshine League in a tournament. With the improved look to the Humboldt field, new turf and a new wood fence, it allowed for a nice venue to host the weekend-long tournament.

In his first year as the Manager of the Wood Ducks, Ellens was able to use his connections with the West Central Baseball Association to “pull some strings” and get the tournament lined up.

The competitive nature of the two different leagues helped to bring this tournament together, and allowed everyone on both sides to seemingly be on board with the idea from the start.

There will be a traveling trophy that goes home to the league that secures the most victories this weekend, and that league will hold it until the leagues meet again next year. Next year will probably be hosted by a Sunshine team after playing in Humboldt this year.

First game is scheduled to start at 6pm on Friday, with Corsica/Stickney from the Sunshine League playing Salem from the Cornbelt. The final game of the weekend will be Mt. Vernon v Flandreau at approximately 7:30pm on Sunday.
