Busy Weekend For Cornbelt Teams At State Am Tournament

Saturday’s games at the 2020 State Amateur Baseball Tournament saw three Cornbelt teams in action during first round play. All three advanced to the second round with great pitching.The Canova Gang got a complete pitching performance from Trey Krier, as he scattered eight hits and gave up three runs in an 8-3 win over Mt. Vernon. Canova scored a pair of runs in four different innings, Justin Miller drove in three and scored twice from the leadoff spot.

Dell Rapids PBR turned to Brett Mogen in the second game on Saturday, as he too put in a complete game effort, striking out eight – walked three and scattered five hits in a 4-1 win over Milbank. Carter Gullickson and Riley Hoffman both scored twice for PBR. Our third game of the day saw Tyler Earls pitch extremely effective for the Salem Cubs in their 3-0 over Crofton, Nebraska. Salem led 1-0 before getting two insurance runs in the eighth inning, one being courtesy of a Cole Cheeseman solo home run.

Canova and PBR will face off in the second game on Tuesday night, following Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks versus Redfield. Salem plays in the first game on Wednesday versus Larchwood.

From Sunday, in second round action, the Dell Rapids Mudcats once again brought their lumber to the field, defeating Groton in seven innings via a 14-0 score. Mark Abrahamson allowed just one hit in the win. Dell Rapids posted three runs in each of the first two innings to jump out early and sealed the game with a six run sixth inning. The Mudcats have outscored their opponents 28-1 so far in the tournament. They advance to quarter final play, returning to Cadwell Park in Mitchell on Thursday evening to face off against defending champions, Alexandria.
