Wednesday night saw the 2020 Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament get underway at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. The Madison Broncos fell short in the first contest, dropping a game to Groton via a 7-4 score. The two sides traded runs in the first few innings before Groton scored three runs in the top of the fourth. The Broncos would answer with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at fours. Groton would reclaim the lead for good on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth and added two more insurance runs to secure the victory.
The nightcap saw the Mudcats of Dell Rapids defeat the Plankinton Bankers 14-1 in eight innings. Dell Rapids got out to an early advantage, batted around in the fifth inning and cruised to the victory. Dalton Allen picked up the victory on the mound and the Mudcats were productive throughout the lineup. Chad Hunt provided excitement with a straight steal of home base, delighting the Mudcats faithful at Cadwell. Dell Rapids will take on Groton in second round action on Sunday evening.
Four more games are scheduled for today, in first round action. Cornbelt teams return to action tomorrow with Flandreau and Hartfold/Humboldt taking the field.
