It’s easy to make the argument that last year’s Madison girls basketball team was the most successful team in school history. The Bulldogs tore their way through the second half of the season, winning 9 of their final 11 games, and finishing runner-up to the State Champions from St. Thomas More.
If the Madison girls want to make it back to a third straight State Tournament, they’ll need to do it with an all new cast of players. The Bulldogs graduated four starters off of last year’s team, with only senior Maddie Gerry returning to the starting lineup. You could call it a rebuilding year, but 2nd year head coach Stacy Anderson says, the players are here to disagree.
Besides Gerry, who averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds per game last season, other key returning players for the Bulldogs will be Grace Nelson, Morgan Anderson, and Kendra Leighton, who all saw time off the bench last year. The team is also hoping for a quick return for injured forward Briana Steuerwald.
The Bulldogs open the season Saturday against Elk-Point/Jefferson. Anderson says she’ll be looking for some aggressiveness from her team in that game.
Madison and the Huskies tip off at 3:45 on Saturday in Elk Point. The Farmer’s Ag Center Pre-game begins around 3:20 on AM 1390.
