Canova scored in all but one inning while totaling 22 hits to punch their ticket to the Class B State semifinals with a 19-9 win on Thursday night in Sioux Falls. The Gang used their bats while taking advantage of 8 errors from the Parkston Mudcats for their second win by 10 or more runs at State.
Parkston scored 5 runs in the 1st inning, all with 2 outs with Spencer Lucas hitting a 2-run home run. Canova took over the lead in the 5th with 5 runs off 2 Mudcat errors and led 9-5. The Mudcats trimmed the lead down to 11-9 in the 6th before the Gang pulled away with another 6 runs in the 8th.
Justin Miller finished with 5 RBIs and Garrett Gassman had 4 hits for the Gang. Derek Miller grabbed the win with 5 ⅓ inning pitched. Parkston’s Brady Nolz, coming off back-to-back complete game victories, suffered the loss by giving up 14 hits and 11 runs. The Mudcats season ends with a 12-14-1 record.
Canova advances to the semifinals and will take on Garretson Saturday afternoon at 1pm on Dakota’s Best AM 1390.
