Trojan Softball drops three straight to open season at Presentation Dome

The softball team for Dakota State University fought tooth and nail but came fell in three straight games to open their season on Sunday in Aberdeen. The Trojans led early but fell to Dakota Wesleyan 9-3, followed by losses to Northern State University 5-3 and the University of Jamestown 10-9.

Dakota State held a 3-0 lead after the first inning against Dakota Wesleyan. The Tigers rattled off 9 unanswered runs off 11 hits over the last 5 innings for a 9-3 win. Peyton Brokiewicz drove in a pair of runs with a double for the Trojans.

In the loss to Northern State, DSU trailed 5-0 until they tried to comeback in the final two innings. The Trojans scored 2 runs in the 6th while scoring once in the 7th before the final out was made. Nicole Stewart and Jasmin Lucero both finished 2-for-4 from the plate. Stewart accounted for the lone RBI for the Trojans.

In the final game of the night, Dakota State and Jamestown traded runs and leads throughout. Trailing 10-6 in the 5th inning, DSU scored 3 runs before being shutout in the 7th inning and falling 10-9. Brokiewicz was a triple shy of the cycle, finishing 4-for-4 at the plate with 4 runs driven in for the Trojans. Xitlali Lopez also collected 3 hits and 3 RBIs.

DSU Softball, starting off 0-3 on the season, returns to Aberdeen on Sunday for the Presentation Dome Tournament. The Trojans will play a tripleheader of games, facing York College starting at noon. Dakota State then faces Dakota Wesleyan around 4pm and Mount Marty around 6pm.
