The Lake County Commission has approved an interim State’s Attorney for the county. During their meeting on Tuesday, commissioners approved Moody County State’s Attorney Paul Lewis to serve in that capacity on an as-needed basis until a full-time appointment can be made. Current State’s Attorney Manny deCastro has resigned from the position, effective October 8th. Lewis will take over as interim on October 9th.
Commission Administrative Officer Shelli Gust told commissioners that Lewis will handle matters related to Magistrate and Circuit Court, bond hearings, and any other legal pleadings or correspondence as necessary. Commissioners approved Lewis as interim State’s Attorney at a rate of 94-dollars an hour, plus out of pocket expenses like mileage, paid at the state rate, and long-distance toll charges. Gust told commissioners that she and Jennie Thompson will do as much as they can to fill in during the interim, but there may be times when overtime may be necessary. Commissioners approved paying Gust and Thompson overtime when needed, including mileage if necessary, throughout the time until a full-time State’s Attorney is appointed.
The commission is currently accepting letters of interest for the State’s Attorney’s position through October 27th. The person appointed to the position will serve through January 6th of 2019. The appointee will then need to run in the general election in November of 2018 and win for a new two-year term that would begin on January 7th of 2019.
