The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the names of the two women involved in a fatal accident Saturday afternoon about seven miles east of Madison. 70-year-old Barbara May of Wentworth died after the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox she was driving east on Highway 34 was rear-ended by a vehicle, which was driven by 75-year-old Barbara Ordal of Madison.
The Highway Patrol says the accident happened just before 2:00 Saturday afternoon when May’s vehicle was stopped at the intersection with 462nd Avenue with it’s lights activated in preparation to turn. May’s vehicle was then rear-ended by Ordal’s vehicle, a 2012 Dodge Journey. May was pronounced dead at the scene. Ordal received minor injuries and was transported to Madison Regional Health. Charges are pending against Ordal in the accident. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Others on scene were the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Ambulance, and Wentworth Fire and Rescue.
