Madison Legion baseball team heads to Tabor for State


The 2014 South Dakota State ‘B’ American Legion Baseball Tournament is set to get underway tomorrow in Tabor.  The Tournament will feature seven Region Champions, plus the host team, in the five-day double-elimination tournament.

Madison Maroon 14s to open State Tournament on Friday


The Madison Maroon 14-year-old baseball team will kick off play at the 2014 VFW 13-14 State ‘A’ Tournament tomorrow.  The 8 team, double-elimination, tournament will take place at the Leahy Bowl in Winner.

The Cornbelt League baseball teams will descend on Colman this weekend, as the District 4B Amateur Baseball Tournament will get underway.  16 games will take place over the course of seven days in the annual postseason tournament.

A pair of Madison golfers took part in the South Dakota Golf Association’s 36th Annual Junior Championship this week.  The two-day tournament wrapped up on Tuesday at the Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Madison MadDogs win State 12U VFW Championship


The Madison 12-and-under baseball team, known as the MadDogs, earned the South Dakota VFW Class A 12-and-under Baseball Championship this past weekend in Humboldt.  The MadDogs outscored their opponents by a 56-4 margin on their way to earning the title.

Madison Maroon 14s survive elimination to claim Region 2A title


The Madison Maroon 14-year-old VFW baseball team avoided elimination five times last week, en route to claiming the Region 2A Championship.  In the decisive championship game Friday night in Flandreau, the Maroon defeated Flandreau 12-11 in extra innings to claim the Region title.

South Dakota State men release basketball schedule


The South Dakota State men’s basketball team has released its schedule for the 2014-15 season.  30 games, including 13 home games, make up the schedule for the Jackrabbit men this year.

Madison Legion Baseball claims Region 2B Championship


After suffering a loss in their first game on Thursday, the Madison American Legion baseball team was able to survive five elimination games, to come back and claim the Region 2B Championship.  Post 25 defeated Dell Rapids in a decisive championship game, 11-5, to advance to the State Tournament.

Dakota State has eight programs named NAIA Scholar-Teams


Eight Dakota State University athletic programs were among the 1,290 that the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has recognized as 2013-2014 NAIA Scholar-Teams.  In order for a team to be considered a Scholar-Team, it must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.0, which include all eligible student-athletes on the team.

Madison Maroon 14s force championship game at VFW Regions


The Madison Maroon 14-year-old VFW team was able to stave off elimination for the fourth time this week at the Region 2A Tournament. The Maroon defeated Flandreau 9-1 on Thursday, in Flandreau, to force a decisive championship game tonight.

The Madison American Legion baseball team suffered a loss in their first game of the postseason on Thursday night.  Madison fell to Dell Rapids 8-5 in the opening round of the Region 2B Tournament in Garretson.

Dakota State University junior football player Bobby Tisch has been named one of a record 182 nominees from across the country for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.  The nominees represent the sports’ finest in the areas of volunteerism and leadership among their peers.

Madison Football players take part in SD All-Star Game


Four Madison High School athletes concluded their high school playing careers on Wednesday night at the South Dakota High School All-Star Football Game.  The Red Team defeated the Blue Team 24-7, in the annual match-up of the state’s best in Aberdeen.

Several area volleyball athletes took part in the annual All-Star game on Wednesday.  Players from Madison, Chester and Arlington all took part in the event at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.

Five Cornbelt League teams are ranked among the top teams in the latest South Dakota Amateur Baseball poll.  The final poll of the season was released earlier this week.

Drelan takes over as Head Coach of DSU Track & Field


Dakota State University has made a coaching transition in the track and field program.  Anthony Drealan, who has served as an assistant, will become the next head coach of the Trojan track and field program.  Drealan will take over for long-time coach Buzz Stevenson, who retired this past spring.
