After delay, Canova claims victory at State Tourney

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- After a nearly 17 hour rain delay, the Canova Gang claimed victory in their opening round game at the State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Sioux Falls.  Canova defeated Volga 12-2 in seven innings, in a game that had to be completed Sunday at Augustana College.

On Saturday, Canova struck first in the ballgame scoring three runs in the third inning.  Jimmy Bauer, Trevor Oswald, and Garrett Gassman each knocked in a run in the inning to put the Gang out front.  Canova got a strong pitching performance from Jared Hegdahl, who retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced.  Volga was able to pull within a run in the fifth inning, scoring two runs, to cut the deficit to 3-2.  However, the Gang exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to lead by 10.  15 Canova batters came to the plate in the inning with Devin Alfson delivering a three-run home run to left field and Jimmy Bauer knocking in a pair of runs with a double to give the Gang a 12-2 lead.  With rain falling at Sioux Falls Stadium, the game was postponed in the bottom of the sixth.  The two teams reconvened on Sunday, and after the final five outs were recorded, Canova claimed the victory.

Jimmy Bauer went 2-for-3 in the game with a double, three RBIs, a stolen base, and a run scored, while Garrett Gassman was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in for the Gang.  Jared Hegdahl picked up the win, going six innings, giving up two hits, while striking out four Volga batters.  Lincoln Gassman pitched the final inning on Sunday for Canova.

With the victory, Canova advances to the second round of the State Amateur Baseball Tournament and will face Crofton, Nebraska on Wednesday night a 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
