Area 4-H members perform well at SD State Fair

Several area 4-H members brought home top awards during this year’s South Dakota State Fair…in a year when overall 4-H programs recorded a 16-percent increase at the Fair.  South Dakota State University Extension reports that 4-H livestock exhibits were up by almost 600 over last year, and display exhibits were up by more than a thousand over 2011.  The Youth in Action category, which includes public presentations, special foods, judging contests, skill-a-thons, and fashion revue – increased by more than 900 this year.
A new way that some 4-H youth with livestock were recognized during this year’s State Fair was through the Beef, Sheep, and Swine Premier Exhibitor program.  Youth received points from a Skill-a-thon, a production management quiz, an industry interview, and showmanship in their respective divisions to win Premier Exhibitor.  A Lake County 4-H member – John Eilertson of Wentworth – placed second in the swine premier exhibitor competition.
Several area 4-H members took top awards in livestock divisions at the State Fair.  Tanner Grocott of McCook County received the Reserve Champion Overall award in the market beef division; Tate Hoff and Tyler Minnaert, both of Lake County, received the Grand and Reserve Champion Overall awards in the market swine division; Hanna Peterson of Miner County received the Grand Champion Overall award in the Market/Meat Goats division; and Colin Nelson of Kingsbury County received the Reserve Champion Overall award in the Breeding Sheep division.
