Pick-up hits house in Madison on Saturday

A 21-year-old Madison man is facing three different charges after the pick-up he was driving hit a house in southwest Madison and he fled the scene.  Madison Police reports show that 21-year-old Justin Eugene Olson of Madison was driving his 2005 Ford F-150 pickup east on Southwest 4th Street just before 9:00 on Saturday night.  Police say that Olson said he had been consuming alcohol, looked down to use his cell phone, and when he looked up again he had drifted to the north side of the street.  He told police that he swerved and tried hitting the brakes, but instead hit the accelerator, the driver’s door came open and he was ejected from the vehicle.  The pick-up continued on south over the south curb of Southwest 4th Street and into the yard of the residence at 227 Southwest 4th Street.  Police reports say that the pick-up went between two trees and struck the west side of the house, taking out a large portion of the side of the house, then hitting a part of a garage and a parked vehicle by the garage.  Police report major damage to the home and other items outside the residence, but minimal damage to the garage.  Police did not have an estimate on the amount of damage to the residence, but Olson’s pick-up damage was estimated at ten-thousand dollars.
Police say Olson fled the scene of the accident Saturday night, turning himself into law enforcement on Sunday morning.  Olson has been cited with hit and run-property damage, failure to report an accident, and reckless driving.
