Dell Rapids, SD -- Salem overcame an early deficit last night as it downed Dell Rapids PBR in a Corn Belt League showdown, 11-5 in Dell Rapids.
PBR took the early lead as Kevin Krull’s RBI single gave the home team a first-inning 1-0 lead. The Cubs rallied in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring a total of eight runs to put them ahead for good. Manager Roger Duxbury says they were able to capitalize on several Dell Rapids miscues.
Salem tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning, as first-year Cub Tony Viger had a breakout game. The Salem shortstop batted 4-5, stole two bases and batted in three runs.
Brian Duxbury and Scott Hoiten each had two-hit nights for Salem, who remain unbeaten in the Corn Belt League at 3-0. Landon Peterson pitched the win, while Brian Voigt , Logan Thune, and Viger all pitched in relief.
Clarence Fjellanger led PBR with 2 hits, while Dan Conrad added a double. Kevin Krull took the loss while Nick Merkwan and Dale Solberg pitched in relief. Manager Jay Bentz says Dells played well at times, but the seven defensive errors they committed was too much.
Due to the Memorial Day weekend, there will be no Sunday games. Our next broadcast will be Tuesday night on Jammin' Country when the Madison Broncos travel to the Dell Rapids Mudcats.
