Elkton-Lake Benton ends Madison's season

Elkton, SD -- The Madison girls’ basketball season came to an end last night at they lost to Elkton-Lake Benton in the first round of the District 5A playoffs. The Lady Elks advanced to Thursday’s title game with a 74-54 victory.

Madison took the early lead 2-0, but the Lady Elks scored 12 unanswered points to take the lead and hold a 15-6 first quarter lead. Head coach Adam Ericsson says the Madison girls struggled in the first quarter, which gave Elkton-Lake Benton the upper hand.

The Elks extend the lead 35-24 at halftime then posted a 52-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Madison cut the lead to single digits but could get no closer as turnovers hurt the Bulldogs once again. Ericsson credits Elkton-Lake Benton’s guards for causing the bulk of those turnovers.

Chloe Nordling led the Bulldogs with 18 points in her final game. Bailey Milne pulled down a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Abby Andresen added six points. The Elks’ Megan Krogman exploded for 11 fourth-quarter points as she led all scorers with 19 points. Cassidy Gebhart added 18 while Molly Koch came off the bench for 11. Krogman also pulled down 11 rebounds for the double-double.

Elkton-Lake Benton will play Flandreau Public Thursday night in Tea for the District Championship as the Fliers downed Flandreau Indians 68-53. Madison ends its season with a record of 3-18.
