Madison, SD -- A fourth-quarter comeback fell just short last night as Madison’s girls lost to Dell Rapids in the regular-season finale at Madison Middle School Gym. The Quarriers held off the Bulldogs 58-49.
Madison grabbed the first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Bailey Milne, but Dell Rapids scored 10 unanswered points to take a 10-5 first quarter lead. Dells went on a 12-3 run to break an 18-all tie in the second quarter then started the third quarter on a 9-0 run. Madison head coach Adam Ericsson says those runs kept the momentum in the Quarriers’ favor.
Trailing 47-32 at the start of the fourth quarter, Madison cut the deficit to 5 with just under four minutes to go in the game only to have Dells nail nine free throws to seal the win. Ericsson credits senior guard Chloe Nordling for sparking the comeback as she erupted for 12 points in the frame.
Nordling led the 3-16 Bulldogs with 18 total points while Bailey Milne had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Brianna Davis led all scorers as she paces the 14-6 Quarriers with 29 points. Sam Steineke pulled down 12 rebounds as the Quarriers out-rebounded Madison 34-25.
Madison has the fourth-seed in the District 5A tournament and will face top-seed Elkton-Lake Benton Tuesday night in Elkton.
