Joseph Manthey, age 83, died at Golden Living Center in Madison on February 11, 2012. He was born on June 27, 1926 at Ramona, SD to Clemence and Caroline (Deragisch) Manthey. He married Caroline Beyer at Ramona on March 4, 1952. She preceded him in death in 1987. He married Joan Bloom at Madison on June 8, 1991.
He is survived by his wife - Joan of Madison. Three sons - Kevin (Crystal) of Bonesteel, SD, Craig (Val) and David (Mona) and one daughter - JoLynn Opdahl all of Madison. 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Two step sons - Jeff (Deb) and Tom (Angie) Bloom both of Madison. Two step daughters - Gayle (Dan) Johnson and Kelly Antonen both of Brookings. 12 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. One sister - Grace Johnson of Portland, OR. He was also preceded in death by his parents - 3 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 grand daughter and 1 step grandson.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at St Thomas Aquinas Church with Rev Robert Vinslauski officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. He grew up on a farm by Ramona graduating from Ramona High School. He enlisted in the US Air Force and served in Korea during the Korean War. After the service he returned to farm near Ramona and in 1955 he started working for Grain Belt Brewing Company in Madison where he worked until 1977 when he went to work for the city of Madison until he retired in 1988. He was a member of the Madison VFW Post and Elks Lodge.
There will be a parish scripture service at 7:00 M on Monday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
