Quarrier Boys pull upset at Corn Palace

Mitchell, S.D. -- After suffering just their second loss of the season on Thursday to Madison, the #2 ranked Dell Rapids Quarrier boys’ basketball team upset Class A #1 St. Thomas More Saturday night at the Corn Palace 58-47. In the final game of the 30th annual Boys Hanson Classic, Dell Rapids picked up their 10th win of the season.
In a day filled with exciting basketball action, the nightcap didn’t disappoint.
St. Thomas More took the early lead in the game and worked the advantage up to 10 points at the end of the 1st quarter. Dell Rapids would bounce back in the 2nd quarter getting scores from Cole Langer and holding the Cavaliers to just three 2nd quarter points, as the Quarriers held the 22-21 edge at halftime.
The Quarrier offense continued their strong offensive output in the 2nd half, shooting 68% from the field. Dell Rapids turned to their junior center Bryce Koch who picked up 13 2nd half points. The Quarriers extended their 1 point led into a 3 point advantage heading into the 4th quarter. St. Thomas More tried to knock down 3-pointers to get back in the game, but couldn’t get enough to fall as Dell Rapids hit their free throws down the stretch and picked up the victory. Bryce Koch led all scorers with 17 points while Cole Langer picked up 16 and Michael Schmidt notched 13 for Dell Rapids. Kilby Rech paced St. Thomas More with 13 points.
Dell Rapids will next take the court Thursday when they travel to Vermillion, while St. Thomas More hosts Spearfish ton Tuesday.
