Bulldogs upset #2 Quarriers

Dell Rapids, SD -- Madison’s boys rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to upset second-ranked Dell Rapids 67-64 last night at the Dell Rapids High School Gym.

The Quarriers started the game on a hot streak as they jumped out to an early 9-2 lead over the Bulldogs. Madison chipped away at the lead and trailed at the end of the first quarter 17-16. Head coach Mike Ricke says the guys stayed cool under pressure, especially when Dells made its runs.

Madison took a 28-25 lead midway through the second quarter, but Dell Rapids used a 9-0 run to take a six point lead at halftime. The Bulldogs held the Quarriers to just seven points in the third quarter to take its first lead of the game, then had to hold off several rallies in the fourth quarter to get the win and improve to 8-2 on the season. Ricke says while they are treating the win as just another game, it definitely is a confidence boost.

Logan Wray led all scorers with 25 points. The senior forward had eight points heading into the fourth quarter, but then exploded with 17 in the final eight minutes. Following the game, Wray says he was ready to take control after being hampered with a knee injury at the start of the season.

Three other Bulldogs had double-figure nights as Tyler Wiebe and Jacob Giles each had 11 points while Mason Sullivan added 10. Cole Langer led the 9-2 Quarriers with 15 points while Bryce Koch added 13 points and Michael Schmidt 12.

Madison returns to the hardwood Saturday as they play McCook Central-Montrose at the Hanson Classic in Mitchell.
