West Central Girls win 6th straight

Hartford, S.D. -- The West Central girls’ basketball team used a dominant 2nd half to pick up a 50-36 victory over Dell Rapids Tuesday night in Hartford. The win was the 6th straight for the Trojans who improved their record to 7-2 on the season.

It was a game between two evenly matched teams in the 1st half. Dell Rapids opened the ballgame with a basket by Haley Fiedler and held the lead for much of the 1st quarter, but the Trojans rallied back and held a 12-10 edge after the first eight minutes. In the 2nd quarter both teams committed turnovers and struggled to find the basket, allowing the Quarriers to make up the deficit and tie the game at 18 as the teams went to the locker room.

In the 3rd quarter, the Trojans came out on fire. West Central got some easy buckets off of the Quarriers full-court press, and also started to connect from the outside. Afton Johnson picked up 11 points for West Central in the 2nd half. The Trojans outscored Dell Rapids 22-10 in the 3rd quarter and cruised to the victory. Madison Kuehl led the Trojans with 15 points, while Johnson had 14 in the ballgame. Dell Rapids was paced by Haley Fiedler’s 15 points.

Dell Rapids (8-3) will next be in action Friday when they host Sioux Valley, while West Central will be on the road Saturday at Millbank.
