Madison, SD -- The Flandreau Fliers snapped Madison’s five-game winning streak last night, downing the Bulldogs 77-66 at the Madison Middle School gym.
Madison held the early lead but the Fliers nailed a trio of three-pointers to take a 21-16 lead. Bulldog head coach Mike Ricke says Flandreau was hot from the field.
Flandreau stretched their lead to double-digits early in the second quarter, but a 40-foot shot by Mason Sullivan at the buzzer capped off a Madison rally to put the score 36-33 Flandreau at the half. The Flier defense held the Bulldogs to just 10 points in the third quarter, then Madison rallied once again in the fourth.
Trailing by two, with two minutes left in the game the Bulldogs committed a shooting foul—Ricke argued the call, drawing a technical foul. Flandreau’s Jacob Patterson nailed all four foul shots, giving the Fliers a six-point lead. Ricke says that technical shifted the momentum back to Flandreau’s favor.
The loss drops Madison to 6-2 on the season. Senior forward Ian Mackenzie says the boys had to contend with Flandreau’s quickness which was forced them out of their traditional defense.
Mason Sullivan led Madison with 18 points while Tyler Wiebe had 13 points and Logan Wray 10. Flandreau had four players in double-figures, led by Patterson’s 19 points. Mitchell Foster and Joe Parsley each had 14 points while Geno Bursheim had 10.
Madison returns home Tuesday, when it hosts the Flandreau Indian School.
