Cossack Girls pick up 2nd straight win



Volga, S.D. -- The Sioux Valley girls’ basketball team made it two for two this week after picking up a 38-33 win Thursday night over McCook Central/Montrose in Volga. Prior to this week, the Cossacks had dropped five straight.

It was a tight game all the way through. The Fighting Cougars held a one point edge at the end of the first quarter, but the Cossacks turned it around and led by one, 14-13 at the half. In the 2nd half, Sioux Valley worked hard and got to the free throw line. The Cossacks went nine of 14 from the charity stipe in the final 16 minutes. Neither team led by more than five in the contest. McCook Central Montrose held a 29-27 lead in the 4th quarter, but Sioux Valley went on an 11-4 run to close out the game.

Sioux Valley’s Carley Peterson led all scorers with nine points. The Cossacks (3-6) also got seven from Natasha Halbersma and six from Carissa Sundenga. For McCook Central/Montrose (3-5), Natasha Krempges had eight off of the bench while Katie Binder notched six points.
