Flandreau, SD -- The Madison girls’ basketball team dropped its season opener Saturday afternoon at the 14th-annual Entringer Girls’ Basketball Classic. Arlington thumped the Lady Bulldogs 47-38 at the Flandreau Elementary gymnasium.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first half as Arlington held a 7-5 first quarter lead and an 18-16 lead at the half. Madison head coach Adam Ericsson says there was a lot of physical play between both teams, with both schools combining for over 20 fouls in the half.
Arlington pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Madison 14-5 and kept the Dogs at bay in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-1. Ericsson says Madison struggled with shooting throughout the game, connecting on just 23-percent of their shots.
Arlington’s Lanny Gross was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. The senior center led the Cardinals with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Two other Arlington players had double-digit nights as Samantha Boeck had 13 points and Kelsey Kaufmann had 12.
Madison had only one person score in double-digits as point guard Chloe Nordling led the Bulldogs with 14 points. She says foul trouble hampered the Bulldogs all game long.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back Tuesday, when they host Tri-Valley at the DSU Fieldhouse.
