Mudcats rally; advance to State
Monday July 26th, 2010
The Dell Rapids Mudcats rallied from an early deficit in yesterday’s district second-round game to win over the Madison Broncos 4-3 in Humboldt. With the win, the Mudcats advance to the State Amateur Baseball Tournament in Sioux Falls.
After a scoreless first inning, Matt Burpee broke the game open in the second with a solo homerun to give Madison a 1-0 lead. The Mudcats tied the game in the bottom of the inning but a solo homerun by Ryan Steffensen in the fourth and a sacrifice grounder by Justin Jaspers in the fifth gave Madison a 3-1 lead.
Mudcat first baseman Gregg Hilmoe says they were still pretty confident heading into the late innings against Bronco pitcher Mitch McNary.
The Mudcats began their rally in the sixth as Matt Wilber scored on a Hilmoe single. The Mudcats tied the game in the seventh as Jesse Kurtenbach scored on a Wilber single while Hilmoe scored the game-winning run in the eighth on a Travis Peters single. Madison rallied with two outs in the ninth as Nick Bird and Trent Miller had singles but Jaspers flew out to center to end the game.
Matt Wilber pitched the win for the Mudcats, in relieve of Dan Gacke and starter Casey Schlecter. He says it was a good game by both teams, despite both offenses being stifled.
Peters and Hillmoe each had three hits for the Mudcats, while Wilber and Kurtenbach had two hits each. Steffensen, Burpee and Bird each had a pair of hits for the Broncos while McNary pitched the complete-game loss.
Our next broadcast from Humboldt will be Tuesday with the elimination round. Lennox will play Tea at 6:00 on AM 1390 while Madison plays Harrisburg at 8 on FM 103.1.
