Iowa man steals fenceposts from Madison business

A 47-year-old Iowa man faces a grand theft charge after allegedly stealing fence posts from a Madison business.  Kirk Kane of Arnolds Park, Iowa was arrested in Madison in the early morning hours of February 14th after a police officer pulled him over for speeding and noticed the posts in the bed of Kane’s pick-up.  According to the police report, Kane’s pick-up had been spotted by another police officer in the Campbell Supply parking lot shortly before he was pulled over for speeding.  The report says there were 391 six and seven-foot steel fence posts in the back of Kane’s pick-up that were taken from Campbell’s.  The posts were valued at close to $1850.
Kane appeared in Lake County Magistrate Court late last week and his attorney requested a preliminary hearing on the grand theft charge.  Magistrate Judge LeeAnn Pierce scheduled that for March 1st.
Grand theft is a class four felony and carries a maximum sentence of ten years in the state penitentiary and/or a 20-thousand dollar fine.
