Heartland Consumers Power District and KJAM Radio have teamed up to offer an exceptional student in one of five area school districts the designation of “Student of the Month.” Heartland has named Trent McKee, a senior at Arlington High School, as the May student of the month.
Heartland provides wholesale power to the cities of Howard, Colman, Arlington, Volga, and Madison, all of which are in the KJAM listening area. Each month of the school year, Heartland has recognized an outstanding student from one of these schools. The student is presented with a recognition certificate and a small token from Heartland. Advertisements announcing the winning student air on KJAM the last week of each month. Officials from each participating school nominated students for the award.
Trent is the son of Lorna and Alan DeRaad. He is currently the local president of the Arlington FFA chapter and was selected by his peers to be the 2011 Homecoming King. He enjoys football, wrestling and spending time with his family and friends. He is planning to attend SDSU in the fall.
“Trent is an energetic and positive role model for our students,” said Arlington High School Principal Rhonda Gross. “He frequently volunteers his time and energy to assist students and staff here in Arlington. He is one of the first of our students to see a need and take care of it.”
Trent is also a member of National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Gross also pointed out that Trent consistently demonstrates a positive attitude in his academics as well as his extra-curricular activities and will be missed next year.
